Article by Abby Andrews, Autobody News

Thank you to Abby Andrews and Autobody News for sharing information about the recent CIECA Webinar "Why the Collision Industry Should Be Interested in V2X." The presentation was led by Arif Rafiq, a transportation industry expert who advises governments on systems developed to manage roads, highways and public transportation infrastructure. Rafiq spoke about why V2X technology will be critical to the future of mobility, including how it could be applied to collision repair.

CIECA Committee Article

VDI

CIECA's Vehicle Damage and Imaging (VDI) Committee was reactivated earlier this year to look at the ‘estimate’ to determine if changes are needed to accommodate today’s collision repair environment, determine if there is information from the past that is no longer necessary or relevant, and ensure that CIECA API Standards (CAPIS) for the estimate will meet future needs. The committee is chaired by Phil Martinez, principal technical consultant at Mitchell International, an Enlyte Company.

“As CIECA’s Architecture Committee defines the structure and operation of the new CAPIS, we want to ensure we meet the industry’s needs as a result of the changes taking place with electric vehicles (EVs), Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), OEM repair procedures and other elements of vehicle repair,” said Paul Barry, CIECA's executive director.

Paulette Reed, CIECA’s technical project manager, said the committee meets bimonthly to develop Assignment and Estimate messages.

CIECA Article

CONNEX

CIECA’s 15th annual conference was held on September 24 and 25 at the MGM Grand Detroit in Detroit, MI. This year’s theme, “The Intersection of Data and Mobility,” focused on presentations and discussions about emerging technologies, how they impact the collision industry and what needs to be done to prepare for the rapidly changing business environment.

In addition to a day and a half of presentations, the event included a National Auto Body Council Recycled Rides vehicle gifting and a tour of the American Center for Mobility. This year also marked CIECA’s 30th anniversary.

“CIECA CONNEX 2024 was our largest event to date and highlighted the importance of technology in the collision industry,” said Paul Barry, CIECA’s Executive Director.

“Data, in its myriad forms, has become the lifeblood of modern mobility, shaping how we navigate our world and interact with technology," said CIECA Chair Ashley Denison, Caliber Collision’s Chief Information Officer. "Today, we stand on the precipice of a new era, where data and mobility converge to create unprecedented opportunities.”

Denison said the conference is a testament to the industry’s collective commitment to harnessing these opportunities, exploring new frontiers, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

Member Spotlight

SUN Collision

Chris Bonneau, SUN Collision Repair Information’s Business Manager, recently shared information about how the company has used CIECA Standards since the company launched Repair Package in November 2023. This feature was created to simplify the blueprinting process and provide comprehensive documentation in support of estimates and insurance claims.

The Repair Package leverages the EMS file from the shop’s estimating system and delivers OEM repair information based on the part number on the shop’s estimate. Bonneau said the SUN Collision platform prioritizes personally identifiable information (PII) security at the forefront.

"We've incorporated CIECA standards and created a taxonomy library that aligns terminology with CIECA and OEM requirements," Bonneau explained. "Additionally, we only retain targeted, vehicle-specific data from estimate exports and do not access or retain any files that contain PII."

The task force found there is enormous potential in the areas of automotive supply, collision repair parts and repairs; however, there is a lack of understanding by business and the industry on 3D printing technology and materials. As a result, Auto Additive was formed.
