  • Review and approval of minutes

  • CIECA Webinars

  • CONNEX: Agenda, number of speakers before and after lunch

  • CONNEX: Speakers

Meeting Minutes

  • The antitrust was read and the minutes were approved.

  • Don asked if it was CIECA’s 30th anniversary and suggested we make pins.

  • CIECA Webinars:

    • Greg Peeters felt his topic was premature to present for April 4 webinar. Originally scheduled March 28. We will look for another presenter to take his place in April or have an additional webinar later in the year.

    • CIECA Technical Webinar: Will be planned for April 25. Paulette said there isn’t a lot of content right now for the release. The Architecture will provide update and share information about the process the committees go through to create new standards.

    • Other possibilities we’ve reached out to include: Doug Hamilton, American Battery Technology Company; Brandon and Seth from Peachtree Corners; Bill Brower from Solera; Transportation Research Center in Ohio; 3D task force; Joshua Thomsen, GM Financial, to discuss Onstar; Michael Lastuka, the OEM auto industry liaison from State Farm, recommended by Michael Giarrizzo; Greg Horn, PartsTrader; Laura Tierney from ShopLoaner proposed speaking and we reached out to learn more about how they use CIECA Standards; and Benito Cid, Mercedes-Benz.

    • Don suggested manufacturers are building their EVs based on a standard application for a battery. Sandy said this is a huge change in the dynamics. She doesn’t think any will share at this time but we should keep the idea for the future. She said Emil is highly engaged in EVs and a great resource in this area. ARA just released a white paper on the importance of testing batteries. The organization is having high level discussions with OEMs.

  • CONNEX

    • Paul created 2024 CONNEX website and graphic.

    • Sponsors: We have a Platinum (OEC) and Gold (Car-Part.com) Sponsor. OEC will sponsor the big reception and Car-Part.com will sponsor the pre-conference reception.

    • An early-bird registration/call for speakers/call for sponsors press release went out.

    • We already have some registrations.

  • CONNEX Presenters

    • Confirmed:

      • Anatomy of an API, Paul Barry

      • American Center for Mobility speaker(s)

      • Posed question about having AI panel with three information providers; Don believes that CCC is the only company that has developed its own application. It is his understanding that Mitchell is using Tractable and Claims Genius. Rav offered to share the names of three contacts to potentially share information.

      • American Center for Mobility will provide one or two speakers.

    • Potential:

      • Emil Nussbaum, Vice President of Strategy, Government and Regulatory Affairs at ARA. Out of town and will follow up.

      • Ohio Transportation Research Center representative

      • Tara at the Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE)

      • Jeff Wildman suggested having a DTE Energy representative in Michigan talk about the grid, energy and charging stations.

      • Paul suggested having an AI panel talk about what has changed and the evolution of AI since we took a deep dive two years ago and didn’t have a dedicated presentation last year.

      • Greg Horn from PartsTrader is going to present. Don said he is a good speaker and very interesting and suggested he cover the supply chain and the current marketplace.

      • Harold Sears, based in MI and involved with the 3D Printing Auto Repair Task Force, has more than 30 years of experience in 3D printing and additive manufacturing and worked for Ford’s 3D printing division. IBIS Worldwide and the 3D Printing Auto Repair Task Force collaborated to discuss the use of 3D printing in the industry and ensure that new technology and practices meet OEM safety and regulatory requirements.

      • We have some insurance contacts from last year if we are looking for a panelist/presenter.

      • Last year, we discussed the possibility of having someone present on PII.

      • We’ve also talked about having someone discuss EV batteries to learn more about this area.

    • Submitted topics:

      • Kristie Werner, URG, regarding panel on used parts. Panel would include her, PRP, a recycler and a consultant. Sandy said she would like to be part of the panel. Paul asked if there was a clear tie to CIECA. If we move forward, we should change the message to be focused on data integration. Don said we could discuss how the applications are going to change and be distributed, and/or are there things that we need to change that could interact with the estimating applications to ensure the correct parts are chosen. Sandy agreed. she said that ARA has worked very long with CIECA on recycled parts usage and ensuring they showed up on estimates. Don said in the past there have been presentations about how the parts damage code applies to facilitate the understanding of quality. He said we could share information about how the applications are going to work and the ability to look them up and how they apply to the estimating applications.

      • Carl Dumele from Aeromotive Services submitted a proposal about evaluating wire damage (repair vs replace). His objective was that managers, estimators and technicians would learn the best practices when estimating wire damage and options to reduce severity, better cycle time, and improve customer satisfaction. Don asked if there was a way to provide that information that would help the industry repair vehicles. He said it might be of interest to discuss repairs that would impact total loss issues. We felt it was more of a CIC presentation.

      • Ken Eagleson suggested Jim Porcari from CmySkills (CMS), which is a new two-sided market focused on catering to the under-served marketplace matching automotive community technicians and shops. The committee felt that it was more of a CIC presentation.

      • Arif Rafiq reached out from Canada and asked about presenting on data standards in the automotive transportation industry. Don asked if there was anything different with Canadian standards and Paul said we have a number of Canadian companies and it hasn’t been an issue.

      • Erick Bickett, Nuventory, reached out about presenting on the automation of the procurement of paint material and related supplies in the collision industry between manufacturers, distributors and collision shops. Erick changed his schedule to be able to attend the conference this year. There is also an opportunity for him to present as part of CIECA’s 30th anniversary and ask some of the other founders and individual people from CIECA over the years to speak.

      • We’ve had several non-industry speakers reach out about speaking for a fee. Kimberly Eubank offered to speak in exchange for video footage. Her topic is For Change™ - How to get your organization clear, ready, and aligned around transformational change.

      • Jay Perry has reached out about speaking on leadership and can tailor his presentation to our audience. Don said he was on the State Farm Advisory Board and it would be pretty cool to have him because he is very nice and knowledgeable. The committee had no concerns having him present.

      • Pete Tagliapietra suggested having a panel discussion focused on how AI will impact the repair estimate acceptance and negotiation between insurers and collision shops. He said he didn’t necessarily need to be on the panel but thought we should address the following topic: The current process of insurers submitting repair estimates that have been created from photos and on site inspection by appraisers is subject to delays, intensive negotiation and exceedingly high supplement rates. The audience will learn how AI will refine the process and the impact to both insurers and repair shops. Don said that he thinks the use of AI is going to be up to individual companies in the future. Paul said we need to have to be careful not to tread into the CIC realm of how it is being used.

  • Paul suggested Stacey send out a list of potential topics we are looking for speakers.

  • We invited Julie to reach out for a call if she had more questions about CIECA and/or the conference.

Great meeting everyone. Thank you for your participation. Have a great week!

  • Antitrust Agreement and Meeting minutes acceptance

  • Rav offered to share AI contacts during the next meeting.
