  • What is Battery Type is that the Material or just a description?

    • This is the material of the battery (Cobalt, Graphite, Lithium-ion, Nickle Metal)

  • Lithium-ion batteries are difficult to get rid of.

    • Recycling of Lithium-ion batteries is not a good process at this time.

    • There is a new organization headed by people close to Tesla that are going to start recycling batteries

      • batteries that are easy to recycle (cell phone) is already being done.

      • Electronic Vehicle batteries recycling is on the horizon.

      • At this time there is an environmental risk to Electronic Car Battery recycling and them being stock piled.

        • Recyclers need to be instructed on what to do with batteries.

        • Lithium-ion batteries has no market for resell and we need to figure this out.

          • The battery can be used after the vehicle is no longer running, can Recyclers sell to other markets that use batteries for solar energy?

  • Some OEM are leasing battery but people own the car.

  • Climate impacts on Battery.

  • Business Objective:

    • The battery for Electric Vehicles are a newer part with environmental risk that we need to determine a workflow to get the battery to the correct people.

      • Would OEMs like to get the battery back and try to sell used battery instead of always selling new?

      • Do we have repair shops that need used batteries?

    • At this time the Recyclers are being charged to dispose of the batteries, and this is expensive. The charge is then going to body shops and back to the customer to dispose of the battery.

  • Workflow:

    • What impacts Electronic Vehicle Battery (Maintenance. Collision)

      • When a battery is not working correctly, how is it repaired or is it replaced?

      • When a battery is not damaged in a collision but the vehicle is totaled can it be resold?

      • When a battery is damaged in a collision; can it be repaired?

        • What does repair cost?

    • When a vehicle is sent to the recycler, what information will they get?

      • Today Information Providers (Mitchell, CCC) has parts and gives access to all OEM parts. This is a manual lookup for one car and one model at a time.

  • Attendees for this process

    • OEMS

    • Recyclers

    • Salvage

    • Battery Manufacturers

    • Metal/Steel recyclers looking into battery?

    • Environmental/Regulatory

Lots of information captured and direction taking shape, great meeting and thank you.

Up Next

  • Review the new Proposal to CIC for Recycler Repairer Advisory Panel

  • Business Objective of Electric Car and Battery and workflow

Action items

Don Porter is going to review the proposal to CIC to clean up the verbiage and make the goal of the proposal clearer.

Thoughts on Battery Aggregate needs with the examples provided:

  • We have OEM, but the Manufacturer of the battery is normally someone else, do we need Manufacturer of battery

  • With OEM do we need car Make/Model?

  • Battery Pack Usable capacity (Kw h)

  • Air Cooled or Liquid cooled

  • Cells

  • Temp readers

  • Do we need advertised Range and/or normal condition range of battery?

  • Charge times and Amps
