  • CONNEX Agenda

    • We discussed the number of speakers we should have during the conference. Don asked how many minutes we are planning for presentations and Paul said it’s typically 40-45 minutes. Don suggested reducing the speaking time and having 30-minute breaks in the morning and afternoon and maybe an hour and a half at lunch. Jeff agreed and said it gives time to get something to drink or go to the restroom and still have time for networking. Kim thought we had time for networking with the schedule last year.

  • CONNEX Sponsors

    • With the new sponsorship model this year, we have two platinum sponsors, OEC and IAA, and one gold sponsor, Car-Part.com.

  • CONNEX Speakers

We invited Julie to reach out for a call if she had more questions about CIECA and/or the conference.
    • Confirmed speakers include:

      • Greg Horn, PartsTrader, will provide an industry update

      • American Center for Mobility will provide one or two speakers

      • Emil Nussbaum, Vice President of Strategy, Government and Regulatory Affairs at ARA will discuss EVs, hybrids and battery

      • Richard Mueller, DTE Energy, will talk about the how EVs will impact the grid

      • Michael Anderson, Guidewire, will participate in a panel discussion focused on Digital Claims. We asked committee if anyone had a contact at Duck Creek. Kim will provide one. Jeff recently saw CCC and Apple present at the BMW conference on what they are doing with Apple Glass and suggested we might want to have someone present on augmented reality.

      • Paul Barry will present on The Anatomy of an API

      • Harold Sears and Mario Dimovski will talk about the 3D Printing Auto Repair Task Force and 3D printing initiatives taking place in automotive. Don asked what materials were being used and wanted to know if it was metal printing. He thought that a broad presentation would be good about what is projected to happen in the future. Jeff mentioned that BASF’s 3D printing group is based in Michigan and focuses on metal 3D printing.

    • Potential speakers:

      • We had several submissions from paid speakers focusing on leadership, including Jay Perry. At this time, we don’t have a budget for speakers.

      • Tara at the Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE) believes she has a prior commitment but confirm.

      • OEMs

        • Chris Wallace, Ford

        • Ronald Trozzo, Tesla

      • Ohio Transportation Research Center representative

      • We’ve also talked about having someone discuss EV batteries to learn more about this area.

      Submitted topics:

      • Kristie Werner, URG, regarding panel on used parts. Panel would include her, PRP, a recycler and a consultant. Sandy said she would like to be part of the panel. Paul asked if there was a clear tie to CIECA. If we move forward, we should change the message to be focused on data integration. Don said we could discuss how the applications are going to change and be distributed, and/or are there things that we need to change that could interact with the estimating applications to ensure the correct parts are chosen. Sandy agreed. she said that ARA has worked very long with CIECA on recycled parts usage and ensuring they showed up on estimates. Don said in the past there have been presentations about how the parts damage code applies to facilitate the understanding of quality. He said we could share information about how the applications are going to work and the ability to look them up and how they apply to the estimating applications.

      • Carl Dumele from Aeromotive Services submitted a proposal about evaluating wire damage (repair vs replace). His objective was that managers, estimators and technicians would learn the best practices when estimating wire damage and options to reduce severity, better cycle time, and improve customer satisfaction. Don asked if there was a way to provide that information that would help the industry repair vehicles. He said it might be of interest to discuss repairs that would impact total loss issues. We felt it was more of a CIC presentation.

      • Ken Eagleson suggested Jim Porcari from CmySkills (CMS), which is a new two-sided market focused on catering to the under-served marketplace matching automotive community technicians and shops. The committee felt that it was more of a CIC presentation.

      • Arif Rafiq reached out from Canada and asked about presenting on data standards in the automotive transportation industry. Don asked if there was anything different with Canadian standards and Paul said we have a number of Canadian companies and it hasn’t been an issuereached out to Michael Lastuka fro State Farm and Michael Giarrizzo at DCR Systems about speaking.

      • Erick Bickett, Nuventory, reached out about presenting on the automation of the procurement of paint material and related supplies in the collision industry between manufacturers, distributors and collision shops. Erick changed his schedule to be able to attend the conference this year. There is also an opportunity for him to present as part of CIECA’s 30th anniversary and ask some of the other founders and individual people from CIECA over the years to speak.

      • We’ve had several non-industry speakers reach out about speaking for a fee. Kimberly Eubank offered to speak in exchange for video footage. Her topic is For Change™ - How to get your organization clear, ready, and aligned around transformational change.

      • Jay Perry has reached out about speaking on leadership and can tailor his presentation to our audience. Don said he was on the State Farm Advisory Board and it would be pretty cool to have him because he is very nice and knowledgeable. The committee had no concerns having him present.

      • Pete Tagliapietra suggested having a panel discussion focused on how AI will impact the repair estimate acceptance and negotiation between insurers and collision shops. He said he didn’t necessarily need to be on the panel but thought we should address the following topic: The current process of insurers submitting repair estimates that have been created from photos and on site inspection by appraisers is subject to delays, intensive negotiation and exceedingly high supplement rates. The audience will learn how AI will refine the process and the impact to both insurers and repair shops. Don said that he thinks the use of AI is going to be up to individual companies in the future. Paul said we need to have to be careful not to tread into the CIC realm of how it is being used.

  • Paul suggested Stacey send out a list of potential topics we are looking for speakers.

      • After hearing about the other types of presentation, Erick felt that this topic wasn’t a fit for CONNEX.

      • Jeff suggested having one of their color designers, Liz, talk about automotive color trends and how they might impact radar and Lidar issues. She is based in Michigan.

      • LexisNexis has been contacted again about presenting.

      • AI: Rav looked into possible AI presenters and his contacts were outside of the collision space, including a contact at AutoZone. He researched some companies in the collision industry, including Marcel Horstmann from Tractable and Summit Chauhan from Cerebrum X who spoke during a CIECA Webinar. We invited Rav to set up a meeting to discuss his background in AI. Kim suggested a speaker who can provide an overview of AI and will reach out. Paul would like us to share information about how AI works rather than the implementation of it.

      • Paul said one of the goals of the conference is to try and bridge the gap between business and technical people. He said it would be good to have a couple of sessions tackling a technical subject in layman’s terms.

      • Jeff said he has a BASF contact who might be able to discuss EV battery materials in Detroit.

    • Possible topics:

      • AI

      • EVs and hybrids/batteries

      • OEM insurance/telematics

      • OEM panel

      • Data privacy

      • A contact from Duck Creek

?? Great meeting everyone. Thank you for your participation. Have a great week!
